Can you actually submit to startup directories?
Every “50 best directories to launch your startup” article is a list copied from another list. We could find no evidence that anyone had opened them. So we did, and then did it again twelve weeks later to see what had changed.

What changed
In June, exactly one directory — Launching Next — served a submission form you could use without an account. In August it returns 403 to an automated request, so nothing on this list is now verifiably open.
Two directories stopped existing. SaaSBird and Stunning both refused connections in June, which at least meant a server was there. Today neither domain resolves. Both still appear on published “best directories” lists.
One moved the other way: Fazier now publishes a free Basic tier — reviewed and listed within 30 days, in exchange for embedding a backlink. It is the only free submission route we could confirm anywhere in the 29.
Method
Each directory's own published submit URL was requested with redirects followed, recording the final HTTP status and the URL actually landed on. Anything returning 200 was then fetched to check whether a form with name, URL and description fields was present without an auth gate.
The redirect destination is the strongest evidence here. A page that returns 200 and then lands you on /login?origin=/submit needs no interpretation. A 403 does: it means a script was blocked, and a person using a browser may well get straight through.
So “account needed” below means “not automatable”, which is a narrower claim than it sounds. Confirming the rest would have meant creating 24 accounts, which we did not do. Where that leaves a row uncertain, the row says so.

Why we ran this at all
We build Zarek, which writes a product's launch and submits it to directories, so we needed to know which of them could actually be reached. In June the answer was one in 29. In August it is none — and the honest consequence is that Zarek pre-fills each submission and hands it to you, rather than claiming to send it.
The point is not that directories are worthless. It is that a list of fifty is a snapshot that decays, and nobody re-checks it. Two of ours died in twelve weeks.
Data is free to reuse with attribution. If you find a row that is wrong, tell us and we will re-test it and say so here.
